At today’s gold spot of $4,040 per troy ounce, pure gold is $129.89 per gram. Buyers pay a share of that by karat: roughly $38–$49 per gram for 10K, $53–$68 for 14K and $68–$88 for 18K scrap (70–90% of melt). Coins and bars get closer to spot. Yes. Sterling (.925) and coin silver are bought per gram off the silver spot price ($53.74/oz today), and most gold buyers also take platinum, dental gold, gold-filled pieces at a lower rate, and bullion coins and bars at close to spot. Plated items have no melt value.
Should I sell gold to a pawn shop or a jeweler in Troy?
Jewelers and dedicated gold buyers usually pay closer to melt value than pawn shops, which price for loans and resale. The Troy list above includes both; any of them should weigh and test your pieces in front of you and quote per gram, and a second quote across town is the easiest way to add 10–20%.
